The History of Motion Graphic's
TV I-dents
Motion graphic's and i-dents are a big part of television, film and DVD's these days. The motion graphic is not a new idea, they go right back to the early days of television. The motion graphic started its life has TV I-dents way back in the 50's. Has you can see here from this 1953 BBC i-dent. These I-dents were developed from a simple black and white image shown between programs to the sophisticated full colour short films that we see today on our screens.

Moving on a couple of years and you can see that that the idea was taking off. This is shown by the next i-dent
This I-dent was first shown on the the BBC in the early 60's and shows the world famous BBC globe. Has you can see it is still a very simple idea. This i-dent was to become iconic in the way people perceive television. This was because when you saw this I-dent you instay know you were watching the BBC channel. So the i-dent became the logo for the BBC which everyone could identify with.
This made ITV come up with its own i-dents so that people could identify with them has well. As you can see hear from this very early ITV i-dent.
Back then ITV was made up of different regional television companies like Granada, Anglia and Yorkshire Television. All these companies had there own logo's and i-dents until the late eights when it was decide to have one logo and i-dent for these companies.
Moving on to the 1970's and i-dents are becoming more popular with television companies across the board. The i-dents are becoming much better in there look and more sophisticated in what they can do. Here are some examples of TV i-dents in the 1970's

Motion Graphic's
Motion graphic's all started with a man called Saul Bass who was a pioneer of motion graphic's and his work that he done is acknowledged has the very first motion graphic's. Her are some examples of his work.
The Man With The Golden Arm a film made in the 1950's. Here we can see the use of title over lays that move with the film and is a very early example of motion graphic's. Saul Bass did some great work in this field and work with some of the greats of his day like Hitchcock to name but a few. He did the opening for Hitchcock's vertigo in 1958 and is a very good example of early motion graphic's.
This was the start of motion graphic's and was made with out the aid of computers. Computer motion graphic did not start to be used widely until the mid eights. This was when computers started to become powerful enough to handle graphic's. Also it was very expensive to do motion graphic at the time. It was left to the big budget films like Superman in 1978 who could afford the price of using motion graphic's.
Has you can see motion graphic's were starting to come into there own and by the mid eight's were becoming an every day occurrence. This is evident in films like Tron which uses motion graphic not just in the opening sequence but through-out the entire film. Tron was a ground breaking film which shows what you could do with animation and motion graphic's and set the tone for the next generation of films to come.
Moving back to TV and television was becoming more involved in motion graphic has well as films. The BBC were using motion graphic's not just as an i-dent but in programs and the weather slot also relays of motion graphic's as well.
